UCSF has recently hired a Chief Genomics Officer and expanded our team of Medical Geneticists, with a focus on adult genetics. With the growing genomics services, we have new roles for genetic counselors. Join our team of genetic counselors, dietitians, and a dedicated Biochemical Geneticist who work with the pediatric and adult populations in the growing Biochemical Genetics program at UCSF's Benioff Children's Hospital - San Francisco The Genetic Counselor is an integral part of the Biochemical Genetics Medicine team and contributes to the management of diverse aspects of the Biochemical Genetics Medicine program, including the coordination of care for patients seen in clinic and on the inpatient service. The Genetic Counselor serves as a critical contact between the metabolic service and patients and families, as well as with non-specialist medical care providers who may have limited knowledge regarding inborn errors of metabolism. The Genetic Counselor will have an active role in the evaluation and care of patients with diverse inborn errors of metabolism, including: mitochondrial disorders, peroxisomal disorders, urea cycle defects, organic acidemias, fatty acid oxidation disorders, and lysosomal storage disorders. S/he will also have an active role in evaluating newborn screen results with the providers, coordinating follow-up laboratories, providing guidance to the primary care provider, communicating with the newborn screening area service center nurses and the Genetic Disease Screening Program of the California Department of Public Health as needed, and documenting/closing cases with physician review for the California State Newborn Screening Program. The Genetic Counselor will help coordinate the administration of the Lysosomal Storage Disease Center (LSDC). Our center cares for patients with diverse lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) including: Fabry disease, Gaucher diseases, Pompe disease, and mucopolysaccharidoses. The LSDC works with specialists in Cardiology, Hematology, Pulmonology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Bone Marrow Transplant, and Radiology. The Genetic Counselor will coordinate and integrate the efforts of these specialists to form a personalized treatment plan for each patient, following established national and international guidelines. The Genetic Counselor will work closely with home care agencies and pharmaceutical companies to assist in the management of enzyme replacement therapy, substrate reduction therapy, and other therapy for lysosomal storage disease patients. S/he will also help organize patient advocacy meetings and manage the industry-sponsored patient registries. The registries are disease-specific collaborative databases that track the natural history of these diseases. The Genetic Counselor will provide care for both pediatric and adult patients, and s/he is responsible for specific work before, during, and after clinic sessions. Pre-clinic session work consists of performing necessary specialized intake functions, including medical record review and collation, summarizing medical history and laboratories relevant to the visit, phone interviews with patients and families, and phone discussions regarding coordination of referrals with referring physicians. In clinic, the Genetic Counselor will obtain updated relevant medical, family and other history, and work with other members of the Metabolic team to help provide evaluation and management, in addition to providing emotional support and assisting with decision-making. Post-clinic session responsibilities include documentation of the information obtained and the medical and genetic counseling information provided; coordination of referrals for additional specialized evaluations and consultations; identification of resources and establishment of needed services for patients and families; provision and explanation of emergency letters to patients, families, and community medical care providers; facilitation, implementation, and coordination of medication and treatment orders; education of school personnel regarding treatment requirements for patients while in school; and answering patient questions by phone and MyChart as needed. Additional responsibilities may include coordinating patient/family discussion or support groups, creating educational materials, participating in performance/quality improvement projects, and other duties as assigned. UCSF is an academic medical center and there are diverse learners in our environment (medical students, genetic counseling students, dietitian interns, pediatric residents, and others), therefore, teaching is also a component of the position. UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Health Professionals (AHP) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governances (OMAG) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric AHPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day .
Minimum two years of Genetic Counselor experience
Valid Genetic Counselor License; or a Temporary Genetic Counselor License issued by the State of California
Active American Heart Association CPR certification; or must be completed within first sixmonths of hire
Board Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling; or eligible to take the next available American Board of Genetic Counseling examination (incumbent will be hired as GC 2 until attainment of GC certification)
Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited training program
Ability to analyze situations, prioritize tasks, develop solutions and make recommendations
Ability to use good judgment and work independently, at times under the pressure of deadlines
Ability to access situations, prioritize workload, develop solutions, and make recommendations
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both over the telephone and directly
The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
Previous experience in Biochemical Genetics
Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, and Russian)
Prior experience with EPIC
Diplomate of the American Board of Genetic Counseling, or eligible to take the next available American Board of Genetic Counseling examination
