One tenure track position beginning September 2020: SUNY Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare invites applicants for open positions at any rank.
The SUNY Stony Brook School of Social Welfare, established in 1971, has an enrollment of approximately 600 students in its BSW, MSW, and Ph.D. programs. The School is committed to preparing students for work in professional social work practice in the public and non-profit sectors of health and social welfare. The School emphasizes a commitment to diversity, human dignity, and social and economic justice with a particular focus on intervening in the social determinants of poverty and inequality that impact health, educational success, and general well -being. The School offers courses both on the Stony Brook campus on Long Island’s North Shore, and in New York City.
Stony Brook University has over 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, and more than 13,500 faculty and staff. The University is a member of the prestigious Association for American Universities (AAU) and one of the nation’s premier centers for academic excellence. The School of Social Welfare is located within a rich interdisciplinary environment, one of five schools comprising the Health Sciences campus. The Health Sciences campus also includes Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and a growing network of community hospitals. Many opportunities exist for collaborative research and teaching, and in some cases, joint appointments within Health Sciences or with other University departments.
It is a very exciting time for the School of Social Welfare, the Health Sciences campus, and Stony Brook University. Stony Brook Medicine has become the lead institution in the New York State Medicaid Redesign effort in Suffolk County, and under the leadership of the School’s new dean and assistant vice president, the School will have a prominent role in its development. The Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program was created in New York State in collaboration with the US Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to enhance the access, improve the quality and reduce the cost of healthcare for Medicaid patients and individuals who have no ability to pay for healthcare. Stony Brook Medicine will coordinate healthcare across more than 500 primary care providers, all of the hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, all of the community clinics and healthcare outreach organizations and 400,000 residents of Suffolk County. The School of Social Welfare will have major responsibility for two of DSRIP’s most prominent initiatives—care coordination and initiating and sustaining collaborations with local residents and community providers. A prominent feature of this work will be to intervene and impact the social determinants – poverty, employment, housing, food security—that result in better outcomes for life success, health, and well-being. The School has grown its student body, faculty, and staff significantly over the past five years. The School’s faculty is deeply engaged in interdisciplinary practice, research, and education that will develop, implement, and disseminate evidence informed models of practice in the areas of integrated health, family, youth, and transitions to adulthood, and community and policy practice.
Applicants must have an earned masters and doctorate in social work or a related field, a commitment to work in an interdisciplinary academic environment, an ability to teach in at least one of the priority areas (social determinants of health, gerontology, social work practice, family and children, race, poverty, immigration, and diversity and inclusion), and a record of externally funded research and scholarly publications appropriate to their rank. Preferred qualifications include applicants who have an MSW degree, at least two years of teaching at a college level and two years post master’s professional practice experience, and expertise in more than one priority area. Applicants with demonstrated experience with populations impacted by social determinants of health are especially encouraged to apply.
Rank and salary: Dependent on academic background and experience.
