Georgetown University, one of the nation’s preeminent higher education institutions, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean for Medical Education at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
The Dean for Medical Education is the academic and administrative leader of the School of Medicine, a cornerstone of the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC). The medical center is an internationally recognized health sciences enterprise with a four-part mission of research, teaching, service, and patient care. The latter is provided through MedStar Health, the largest integrated health system in the mid-Atlantic. The partnership between MedStar Health and Georgetown is longstanding and aligned in patient care, education, research, and philanthropy.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences/Executive Dean of the Medical School, the Dean for Medical Education serves as an integral member of Georgetown University Medical Center’s senior leadership. The Dean will bring a systems-wide approach to lead the comprehensive strategy that shapes the education and training of physicians and investigators to meet the needs of society in the 21st century.
The successful candidate will possess an exemplary track record of leadership and a firm grasp of current and emerging challenges in medical education, patient care, and research. The Dean for Medical Education must be intrinsically oriented to collaboration and demonstrate an appreciation of the breadth of specialties within the School and range of missions in any aligned academic health sciences center. The Dean for Medical Education will work with faculty and other education leaders to examine ways in which undergraduate medical education might integrate with other education and training opportunities across the School and University—including but not limited to the School of Nursing and Health Studies (NHS) and Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) of the Graduate School—and between Georgetown and MedStar. Central to the role is further tightening connectivity to generate innovations unachievable by a single unit.
Demonstrably strong leadership and management capabilities are required. Humility, service, compassion, a commitment to diversity and health equity, and a duty toward ‘the greater good,’ define successful leaders at Georgetown. The next Dean for Medical Education will embody these values.
