University Health Services (UHS) serves the campus as a comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited medical care, mental health services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. We coordinate off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals and also administer a major medical insurance plan for students. In conjunction with an active clinical practice, and as a key member of the Clinical Services Management Team, the Associate Medical Director is responsible for ensuring that issues affecting clinical practice, quality of care, and clinician job satisfaction are appropriately managed in Primary & Urgent Care.
Supervises career and contract clinicians in the Primary Care and Urgent Care Clinics, directly or indirectly, including recruitment, hiring, orientation, proctoring, and performance management. May supervise and support subordinate managers within clinical services including Nurse Practitioner Supervisor.
Plays key role on Clinical Services Management Team, leads Clinician Practice meetings, and advises Medical Director and Senior Leadership on matters pertaining to quality of care. Works closely with Operational Manager(s) to develop clinician staffing plans for academic year and break periods, balancing needs of staff with timely access to care.
Participates in cross-practice interdisciplinary clinical leadership meetings focused on the seamless, integrated care of UCB students; is a permanent active member of the Clinical Case Review Committee and Quality Improvement Committee.
Participates actively in informing, developing, and implementing the UHS strategic plan within clinical services.
Shares with the Medical Director the responsibility for providing medical consultation and review for laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and physical therapy services. Assists the Medical Director and Clinical Services Director in addressing service-wide issues relating to quality of patient care and patient satisfaction.
Functions as a resource for management of complex or difficult patient cases.
Shares with the Medical Director the responsibility of evaluating and responding to student comments or complaints about the medical component of visits to UHS.
Works with UHS Electronic Health Record (EHR) support teams to further integrate and improve use of EHR in all patient care areas, improving the efficiency and quality of clinically appropriate documentation, while harnessing the power of the EHR to track on UHS' performance on defined preventive care and outcome measures.
Maintains an active clinical practice in Primary and Urgent Care, incorporating all the job responsibilities of the Physician 4.
Substantial experience providing primary and/or urgent care to adults and/or adolescents; advanced clinical skills appropriate to role as expert clinician consultant.
Managerial, administrative, and/or supervisory experience in a clinical setting preferred, or proven ability to lead, coach, and mentor others that will translate successfully to a management role.
Advanced communication skills; proven ability to collaborate with and influence others.
Expert familiarity with medical records systems and advanced computer literacy.
Understanding of and sensitivity to the professional identity, interests and skills of other team members, including nurses, nurse practitioners and other mid-level clinicians, health educators, support staff, and administration.
Capacity to develop constructive and caring professional relationships, consistent with UHS statement of Patient's Rights and Responsibilities, characterized by: respect for the patient as an individual regardless of cultural, racial/ethnic background, gender identity, or sexual orientation; recognition of his/her rights as a client; concern for the problems or questions that brought him/her to health care; and understanding of the social and environmental context of health on the college campus.
Education, Training, Licensure, & Certifications
Board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Primary Care specialty (strongly preferred), OR Board certification in other ABMS specialty with appropriate primary/urgent care training/experience. Maintenance of Certification participation is required. In possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Medical Board: current State of California Medical License, or ability to obtain CA license by the start of employment.
DEA license, basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification, Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System Registration, and UHS "Qualifications for Physician Employment"
Clinical experience in a college health setting.
Experience leading continuous quality improvement within a clinical setting.
Commitment to multiculturally informed care models and experience working with a highly diverse community.
