The Acute Controlled Substances Pharmacy Technician is responsible for working with the pharmacist in processing medication orders at Banner Baywood Medical Center, in Mesa, AZ. Banner Baywood Medical Center was awarded the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence presented by Health Grades. This award recognizes the top 5% hospitals in the nation with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates in 21 of 32 common diagnosis and conditions. This technician performs routine duties in packaging, distribution and record keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. This Acute Controlled Substances Pharmacy Technician will also assist in preparing intravenous medications, total parenteral nutrition products, and chemotherapy agents.??A Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention Certificate is required.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position will specialize in the oversight and coordination of activities related to the handling and compliance of controlled substances throughout the facility. Responsibilities will include completing quality assurance activities related to diversion prevention monitoring procedures. This position will participate in an auditing plan to address areas of high risk, identify gaps in current processes and identify area trends. The specialist will maintain knowledge and understanding of controlled substance laws at the federal, state and local level. This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist performing routine duties in packaging, distribution, non-sterile compounding, and record-keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist.?? Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1.??Maintains full knowledge of clinical techniques, software applications, or skilled trade. Documents according to standards set by the department and regulatory agencies. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances. Understands and can demonstrate the process for compounding and waste management of controlled substances.

2.??Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items. Effectively uses pharmacy computer systems to investigate and respond to missing medication requests.

3.??Responds to standard requests from internal and/or external customers. Interacts primarily with department personnel, cross-department personnel, internal and/or external customers, patients and physicians. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action.

4. May use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after checking by a pharmacist. When allowed by law and policy, and upon completion of proper training/competency assessment, may restock automated dispensing technology using barcode scanning verification devices.

5. Manages users within the automated dispensing technology database as per policy. Investigates discrepancies and troubleshoots malfunctions in automated dispensing technology. Handles all controlled medications following federal and legal requirement as set through policy and procedure.

6. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with all policies, laws, and regulations. Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. May also participate in pro-active diversion monitoring of controlled substances.

7. Coordinates and assists in supervising the work flow of the Acute Pharmacy Technician Trainee, Acute Pharmacy Technician , Technician Externs and volunteers. Assists the Technician Supervisor with training and completing performance appraisals. Ensures technician staff adherence to departmental policies and procedures. Assists in scheduling to assure staffing is at appropriate levels and is responsible for filling in during absences. Responsible for the operation of a specialty area.

8. May perform supervisory functions as related to workflow and/or function as the responsible individual in specialty function or area. This position is instrumental in the education and training of the Acute Care Technician, Acute Senior Pharmacy Technician, Technician Externs, Technician Trainees, and volunteers and serves as the primary preceptor to verify competency using assessment tools and the teach back method for the specialty area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Certification Program.

Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice. Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention Certificate required.
Minimum of three years pharmacy technician experience within acute care. Ability to complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required. Strong customer service focus, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, prioritization capabilities, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task. Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and Automated dispensing systems. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and other contacts.

Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. Employees working at Banner MD Anderson or BUMC-P Whole Health Counseling must possess a State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment.
